Call for Participation: Case Studies of Urban Datafication

This is a call for Participation in a case study titled
“Urban Data and Data Justice: The case of smart metering deployments in Johannesburg and Gauteng”
This call is directed to junior researchers based in Southern Africa to participate in conducting research, as well as intermediate and senior researchers to mentor and / or peer review this series of case studies.
The case study will investigate the effects of the deployment of smart water and electricity metering in Johannesburg and the South African province of Gauteng. Smart metering is a case of datafication in the provision of water and electricity with potential social justice outcomes.
The actors involved in this case study are residents of the urban areas of Gauteng; the state-owned grid providers, companies involved in both the provision of smart metering as well as in the reading of meters, and security companies in response to community protests.
Beyond South Africa, this call is open to similar cases in urban areas of Southern Africa, in particular Harare, Lusaka, Maputo, Lilongwe, Blantyre, Arusha, Dodoma and Dar es Salaam.
Junior researchers are asked to outline their contribution to the research including a time-frame and methodology, and to propose a monetary research allowance up to USD1000.-. Applications will be processed on a rolling basis. Application deadline is 30thFEB2019.
